Wheel Term Classes

Learning to throw on the potters wheel is fun and challenging, but it is a discipline that requires many hours of dedication to learning the fundamental principles of centering and wedging clay and learning how to throw a good cylinder before you can delve into exploring more complex shapes.

Mastering centering – I encourage my students to take their time concentrating on developing the skill involved in this learning process. Once you have mastered centering and can create great cylinders and mugs, you have a strong foundation for learning how to make more complex shapes.

If you have the patience and dedication to see this process through, then wheel work is for you! I encourage you to take at least one term of handwork before signing up for a wheel class if you have never done any pottery. This gives you a good feel for the clay and basic processes involved in creating ceramic pieces before committing to a wheel work class.

This class is also ideal If you already have some throwing skills and are looking to advance your skills.

Please be aware that we are not going to be making huge items or full dinner sets etc…this is a learning platform and we are limited by size and volume as to what can realistically fit into the kiln.

Friday Morning term class:  9:30am – 11:30am

Tuesday evening term class: 7pm- 9pm

The Studio

Welcome to The Garden Pottery Nestled in the heart of Christchurch, New Zealand, this boutique studio is where clay comes to life—transformed into tactile, earthy, and beautifully crafted pieces that reflect the rhythms of nature. With over two decades of experience, Linda Burns brings a deep connection to her material and a passion for sharing the ceramic arts.

From sculptural forms rich in texture to functional ware made for everyday rituals, each piece is thoughtfully created using traditional techniques like wheel throwing, hand-building, and slip casting. Whether you're here to explore Linda’s latest collections or to join a hands-on workshop in her serene home studio, you're invited to slow down, get inspired, and reconnect with the art of making.
